Today, Missy Cotter Smasal, a small business owner and Navy Veteran, will announce her candidacy for Virginia’s 8th State Senate seat at the Virginia Beach Democrats Monthly Meeting. She is running as a Democrat against Republican incumbent, Senator Bill DeSteph. Missy is a Navy veteran, small business owner, mother, and active member of the Virginia Beach community.

“I am excited and honored to launch my campaign for the Virginia Senate. I am running for a safer and more resilient Virginia Beach and hope to stand up for better school safety, more education funding, protecting our environment, and a strong economy for the future.” Missy Cotter Smasal said.

“I am looking forward to knocking on doors and talking to voters about their vision for a future Virginia Beach.”

Last year, Missy became a school safety advocate when she collected over 2,500 signatures from local parents to help change the rules about locking the doors at Virginia Beach schools. You can learn more about her action on school safety here.
