Virginia Beach, VA – Today at 5:01 PM, Missy Cotter Smasal has officially been named the Democratic Nominee for Virginia’s 8th Senate District challenging one-term Republican Senator, Bill DeSteph. Missy’s background as a Naval Officer, small business owner, and community activist resonates with Virginia Beach voters, who helped her collect twice as many petition signatures as needed to qualify for the ballot.

“This campaign will focus on protecting healthcare for thousands of Virginia Beach residents, restoring funding for our schools, and fighting for protections from sea-level rise and recurrent flooding,” Missy said, “I’m honored to be the candidate and to champion these issues for Virginia Beach families.”

Virginia’s 8th Senate district is one of the top seats targeted by the Democrats to flip this cycle. In 2018, Tim Kaine won the district by over 6% and Governor Ralph Northam won the district by nearly 2% in 2017. Missy’s background as a Naval officer and small business owner gives her a unique experience to bring to Richmond.
