Community Safety and Gun Violence Prevention
It’s been months since the shooting in Virginia Beach, and all we’ve seen from Richmond politicians so far is complacency.
Universal background checks and red flag laws will make communities and police officers safer. Gun violence prevention is an urgent, critical issue for our Commonwealth.
The General Assembly has shirked its constitutional duty to education funding over the past decade. It’s time to restore funding to the pre-recession levels and to pay our teachers fairly so we can keep their talent here. Funding for schools is both a short- and long-term investment that positively impacts the entire community.
When you’re sick, you should be able to visit the doctor. If you have a major illness or accident, you shouldn’t go bankrupt while you’re trying to get well. Missy supports the recent Medicaid expansion, and wants to continue increasing access to more members of our community.
Virginians also deserve quality plans that come fairly priced and actually cover their needs.
Climate change and sea level rise are one of the biggest challenges we face. We need to enact legislation to deal with the immediate threat that sea level rise and flooding pose to our homes and businesses, and Richmond must help shore up its largest city.
We have to get serious about reducing the future impacts of climate change. Virginia Beach is positioned to be a leader in offshore wind power, but the General Assembly needs to set the conditions to make it a reality.
The Equal Rights Amendment
A staunch supporter of equal rights, Missy worked with a team to bring the Equal Rights Amendment to the Virginia Beach City Council, where it passed unanimously. It’s time to take this fight for equality to the state level. Virginia should be the 38th state to ratify the ERA and to officially enshrine the rights of women in the Constitution.
Protecting Women’s Reproductive Rights
Decisions about abortion and contraception should be left to a woman and her doctor. Reproductive rights are under assault in many state legislatures, and Missy will stand firmly for a woman’s right to make her own decisions.
Non-partisan redistricting is fundamental to a fair democratic process. Voters deserve to choose their lawmakers and not be gerrymandered. Virginia is redistricting for the first time in 10 years in 2020, and the results of this election will affect voters until 2030. Missy is committed to preventing gerrymandering to ensure that each constituent is fairly represented.
