Virginia Beach, VA – June 4th, 2019

Today, Missy Cotter Smasal received the endorsement of Giffords PAC and was awarded the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. Missy is honored to receive their support and will work with these groups to take action for gun violence prevention.  After the tragedy in Virginia Beach, the need for action is immediate. She had this to say on Friday about the shooting at the Virginia Beach municipal building:

The shooting in our home of Virginia Beach was the 150th mass shooting this year. Our current state senator is calling for thoughts and prayers while he has failed to take any action to prevent gun violence in his six years in Richmond.” Missy Cotter Smasal said, ”In fact, he is an extremist about weapons, having voted for a dangerous “bazooka” bill. He is a registered gun dealer and sells them out of his home. While he dithers, refusing to legislate, and profits by selling guns, peoples lives are at risk. It’s time to take a stand for public safety and vote him out of office this November.

Missy Cotter Smasal is proud to earn the support of such important members of the gun safety community. Here is more information about the organizations supporting the campaign:

Moms Demand Action: Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for new and stronger solutions to lax gun laws and loopholes. Since its inception after the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, Moms Demand Action has established a chapter in every state of the country and, along with Students Demand Action, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Everytown Survivor Network, is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with nearly six million supporters.

Giffords PAC: Led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the organization works to tackle America’s gun violence crisis. A safer America is possible—one where our children can grow up without fear of gun violence. At Giffords, they work to shift the culture in our communities, change policy by electing lawmakers in support of safer gun laws, and challenge injustice by holding the gun lobby and special interests accountable.  “We’re only 154 days into 2019 and we’ve suffered through 156 mass shootings. Just a few days ago, Virginia Beach became the latest community where the peace of the workday was shattered by gunfire. We must remind ourselves so much daily heartbreak and horror should never be normal. In Richmond, there are politicians who repeatedly take the gun lobby’s money and vote against our safety. But we have the power to change this status quo. Today, we are backing a new generation of Virginia leaders. Champions who will fight for us at the state capitol and work relentlessly to pass life-saving legislation. We are proud to support their campaigns and stand with these candidates who have the courage to finally address the gun violence crisis and protect us.” -former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords
